Islands have always fascinated human imagination as they are uninhabited (most of them), lavishly vegetated, mysterious geographical forms in the middle of the waters. Although uninhabited, fluvial islands are vital for riparian population, for nation-states but also for more-than-human as well. They are “web of life” in the middle of the river. In this session,Ștefan Dorondel, Daniel Cain and Stelu Șerban will talk about the importance of these geographical forms and about their history. They will explain why these forms are so dynamic, changing their architecture and how they became “web of life” for humans and more-than-humans. These presentations approach the study of the Lower Danube islands from the environmental history and environmental anthropology perspective – disciplines less present in the Romanian academic milieu.
