Following last year's success of their Island performance at the Romanian Cultural Institute, we and Kazum have invited Ada Milea & Alexander Balanescu to a new music "stage", part of Balkan Fever Festival 2007. Together with the Balanescu Quartet, they will have a concert at the Spitz on 3 May 2007.
Extraordinary Romanian vocalist Ada Milea uses her voice to create moods, colour and reflection as much as to sing songs. Working in theatre (including Cirque du Soleil) her performances are experiences of powerful and playful expression. She has collaborated with Alexander Balanescu on several projects, including the surrealist work, The Island, presented in November 2006 at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London.
Born in Bucharest, violinist Alexander Balanescu has always sought to present contemporary music in new and accessible contexts, working with Michael Nyman, Jack de Johnette, Carla Bley, and the Pet Shop Boys; playing a string quartet in a club venue such as the Spitz is just the kind of thing he enjoys. He explored his Romanian roots with works such as Luminitza, and Maria T based on the songs of Romanian diva Maria Tanase.
The concert is part of Balkan Fever London 2007, which celebrates Bulgaria and Romania's EU accession and the opportunities this brings for cultural exchange.
