Romanian artists are back in London, at the largest contemporary art showcase in the UK, Frieze Art Fair. Vector organisation from Iasi and highly praised artist Ion Grigorescu present new work, in collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute in London.
Vector will face the impossible task of performing its usual function, despite its temporary displacement from its permanent site in the city of Iasi. Vector will be represented by work of artists Matei Bejenaru, Florin Bobu and Antonia Hirsch as well as the writer Dan Lungu. Another dimension of their presence at the fair will be Vector Publication, an experimental book with contributions by artists who collaborated with Vector from 1997 - 2010.
The event is part of Frieze Projects, a programme of artists' commissions realised annually at Frieze Art Fair. In 2010 it is curated by Sarah McCrory and includes nine specially commissioned projects as well as the Cartier Award.
Ion Grigorescu presents a premiere exhibition of painting, part of Frame section within the fair, dedicated to solo artist presentations. The artist is represented by Andreiana Mihail Gallery in Bucharest.
Ion Grigorescu (b.1945) has worked extensively with performance, which he documented through photos and 8mm films (most of them in black and white). After 1990 the artist staged a spectacular comeback with a series of personal exhibitions and happenings in Bucharest, Venice, Vienna and Amsterdam. His body-focused work from the 1970s has been rediscovered and Grigorescu is now unanimously acknowledged as a highly relevant contemporary artist.
