Fostering Artistic Practices - Call for visual arts projects to happen at the Romanian Institute for Culture and Humanistic Research of Venice in 2011

The Romanian Institute for Culture and Humanistic Research of Venice announces the open call for visual art projects to be realized in 2011. The projects are expected to take place in the two exhibition spaces of the Institute: the New Gallery and the Small Gallery. This call is part of the new visual arts strategy of the Romanian Institute for Culture and Humanistic Research of Venice. Fostering Artistic Practices will frame the agenda for 2011. The Visual Art Strategy's main objective is to support visual artists in the process of understanding and working alongside specific institutional profiles and legacies

Guidelines for the open call for visual arts projects hosted by at the Romanian Institute for Culture and Humanistic Research of Venice
in 2011
I. Introduction

The Romanian Institute for Culture and Humanistic Research of Venice (later called RICHR Venice) organizes the call for visual arts projects in 2011, according to the measures of art. 3, Lett. j of Law n. 356/2003,.
II. Agenda

2011's theme for the visual arts strategy of RICHR Venice's will be Fostering Artistic Practices.

III. Concept

The central purpose of RICHR Venice visual arts strategy, in conjunction with this call, is to support visual artists in understanding and working with processes dedicated to the specific profile and the legacy of RICHR Venice (its own positioning in the city's cultural landscape, its contribution to humanistic research, its history, its documents, its art collection and so forth).
The concept derived form the observation that contemporary artistic practices are more often based on the notion of history (recent or not, private or collective), its re-writing from a atypical standpoint, but also based on the archive as a body of resources or the format of creation. And also, considerations on the legitimacy of the document.
The applicants will be asked to send a project proposal for an exhibition, not documentation or a publication plan. Thus, RICHR Venice is willing to provide additional support towards to the thematic direction, as well a methodological framework. In this way the process will foster and propel artistic practices.
The contest is open to different approaches in visual arts. Its aim is to offer more possibilities for creative actions/gestures/answers that use languages and strategies particular to human sciences (sociology, anthropology, history etc.).

IV. Board

A board will be created and will suggest an annual theme for the call for projects in visual arts at RICHR Venice. The board will meet yearly in Venice in order to evaluate and select the most suitable projects. Members of the board, designated by the order of the President of the Romanian Cultural Institute on proposal of RICHR Venice, will form the board in relation to the visual arts strategy.

The members of the board will be expected to be specialists in visual arts, and who are not employees of the Romanian Cultural Institute. An exception from this rule is made by the representative of RICHR Venice, who will have a vote towards the feasibility of the projects.

V. Selection criteria

1. The project proposal should take into consideration the theme and concept proposed by the jury. 2. The motivation of the projects
3. The feasibility of the project (taking into consideration practical issues that may be encountered during the realization of the project, within budget limitations; the difference of estimated costs for implementing the project);
4. The project's degree of compatibility with the gallery (galleries) offered.

VI. Exhibition Projects

During the year 2011, the visual arts strategy of RICHR Venice will include a maximum of four projects, according to the potential of the exhibition spaces.
The exhibition spaces will be offered to the artists within the following time frame:
The Small Gallery (Attachment no.1) of RICHR Venice (April 5th – May 15th 2011, May 17th – December 3rd 2011, December 5th 2011 – January 31 2012)
and The New Gallery (Attachment no. 2) of RICHR Venice (April 5th – May 15th 2011, December 5th 2011 – January 31 2012)

VII. Supported by the RICHR Venice

The material support is entitled to physical persons according to the present guideline and respecting the guidelines of the given budget.
The material support is allowed on the basis of the jury's decision. The jury will also give recommendations towards the amount of material support.

Romanian Cultural Institute will contribute towards the realisation of the project (concept, documentation, implementation) with an amount of up to 11 000 Euros per project. This support is based on the estimated project needs and according to the financial procedures of the Romanian Cultural Institute.

The participants can obtain material support form the Romanian Cultural Institute for one project that will take place in the fiscal year for witch the contest was organized.

VIII. Applying

Responding to the call is free. Please send the required documentation, with the above guidelines in mind, by post.
The contest is public and is addressed to visual artists, Romanian or foreign citizens.

Exclusions apply to those who are directly or indirectly, participants with the Romanian Cultural Institute as employees, family members or their professional collaborators.

One can apply with one project or for a single space, or for both spaces jointly.

The application should include:
- The field inscription form dated and signed (Attachment no. 3);
- Curriculum Vitae of the author, in English;
- Image portfolio of the project or of previous works;
- Drawings that will present the project at scale (chosen by the author) that will include perspectives, views, sketches, models, cross sections and other details (optional);
- Description of the project;
- Estimated budget, detailed on expenses categories (the contribution of the Romanian Cultural Institute will not exceed the amount of 11 000 Euros).

The folders containing the projects will be sent via mail and to be received no later than January 31, 2011 (post dated) at the address:

IX. Contestation

The applicants to the call, can send their contestations only regarding the organizational procedures and the realisation of the contest in the period of time indicated in chapter X. Contestations will be sent to the address istiorga@tin.it
The commission that will answer the contestations will be made by an impair number of members, designated by an order of the President of Romanian Cultural Institute. In the commission that will answer the contestations cannot take part members of the jury. The contestations will be answered within 5 days from the expiry day of their deposal.

X. Calendar
- Public announcement of the contest: November 30th 2010
- Submission Date: January 31 2011;
- Application Evaluations: February 15-16th 2011;
- Announcement of results: February 20th 2011;
- Contestation period: February 23-25th 2011;
- Announcement of contestation results: March 3rd 2011.

The results of the contest will be made public on the internet at www.icr.ro and www.icr.ro/venetia/
