From Sculpture to Sound: New Music Inspired by Constantin Brâncuși

Five world premieres at the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Debut Sounds

“Simplicity is not an objective in art, but one achieves simplicity despite one's self by entering into the real sense of things.” – Constantin Brâncuși

In 2026, marking 150 years since the birth of Constantin Brâncuși, a founding figure of modern sculpture, we dedicate a special season of events to his life and work. The fourth event in the Brâncuși 150 series is presented in association with the celebrated London Philharmonic Orchestra and forms part of the orchestra’s acclaimed Debut Sounds programme, which showcases new music by emerging composers.

Inspired by Brâncuși’s artistic vision and his pursuit of “the inner, hidden reality” of things, LPO commissioned five young composers to create new orchestral works that respond to some of the sculptor’s most celebrated creations and ideas. Developed under the mentorship of the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Composer-in-Residence, Sir George Benjamin, these world premieres explore the relationship between form, abstraction and essence, translating Brâncuși’s sculptural language into sound.

The programme features five world premieres by LPO Young Composers:

Seyoung Oh -Beginning of the World

Margot Pommellet -Étude pour un oiseau de bronze (In memoriam Brâncuși)

Edward Mascall-Robson -Socle

George Stevenson -Léda

Michael Taplin -Arcus

Performed by musicians from the LPO Foyle Future Firsts Development Programme alongside LPO players, all under the baton of William Cole.

This special concert offers a unique opportunity to experience Brâncuși’s legacy through contemporary musical creation. By bringing together emerging compositional voices and one of the United Kingdom’s leading orchestras, the event reflects the enduring relevance of Brâncuși’s ideas across artistic disciplines and generations.
