Nicolae Titulescu -a titan of global diplomacy

Continuing the ICR Beijing Conferences, on Tuesday, May 16th, 2023, starting at 10:00 a.m. , at the institute's headquarters in the Galaxy Soho building, a double event took place dedicated to Romania's greatest diplomat, Nicolae Titulescu: the launch of the book "Nicolae Titulescu - A Great Romanian, a Great European, a Great Contemporary" and the lecture "The Relevance of Nicolae Titulescu" given by Prof. Dr. Adrian Năstase, former Prime Minister of Romania.

As emphasized in the preface of the volume launched, "in the gallery of personalities who have marked the last century, marked by great achievements, but also by enormous suffering for the Romanian nation, Nicolae Titulescu stands out as one of our most illustrious mentors. And this is because he knew how to combine duty with love of country to find the right balance between the interests of the country and the interests of the continent and the whole world. With this balance, we Romanians contribute today to the solidarity of the international community."

Nicolae Titulescu (1882-1941) was a jurist, economist, diplomat, politician, and statesman from Romania, a prestigious figure of the domestic political life, as well as of foreign policy, a reference name of the international political scene of the first half of the 20th century. He was erudite, a leading specialist in civil law and public international law, a humanist, and a democrat. He served as Minister of Finance twice (1917; 1920-1921); extraordinary envoy and plenipotentiary minister of Romania in London (1921-1927; 1928-1932); and Minister of Foreign Affairs several times, in the periods 1927-1928; 1932-1936. He was a member of the Romanian delegation at the Paris Peace Conference (1919-1920) and a co-signer of the Treaty of Trianon. He played an important role - in all international conferences of the time - in issues such as war reparations, minority regimes, the creation and consolidation of subregional and regional security structures, the definition of aggression, taking war outside the legal framework, concluding bilateral treaties with neighbors, fighting international terrorism, liberating economic and financial relations from outdated constraints, codifying international law, etc. He had collaboration and friendship relations with the entire international political elite of the first half of the 20th century. He was rightly considered one of the fathers of the League of Nations Pact and the living soul of Geneva.

With the launch of "Nicolae Titulescu - a titan of global diplomacy," a new book exploring the life and legacy of one of Romania's most accomplished diplomats, our conference featured expert speakers and insightful discussions on Titulescu's contributions to international relations, as well as his impact on Romania and the world.
