Few of Shakespeare’s plays provoke as much debate asThe Taming of the Shrew. In this fresh interpretation, a London-based ensemble of Romanian artists revisits the text with curiosity and contemporary insight, opening it to today’s conversations around gender, autonomy and the delicate balance of power within relationships.
In a world of feeds, filters and performances… who can be really tamed? Who is controlling the story?
In an age increasingly shaped by digital mediation, curated identities and public performance, the notion of “taming” takes on renewed resonance. The production invites audiences to reflect on questions that feel distinctly contemporary:how do we negotiate desire and autonomy? What does equality look like in practice? And is genuine connection still possible within a culture driven by image and expectation?
Rather than offering definitive conclusions, this interpretation creates space for reflection and dialogue, engaging both with Shakespeare’s text and with the complexities of the present moment.
We warmly invite you to join us for this special celebration of Shakespeare in London, and to continue the conversation at the York International Shakespeare Festival. The performance in York, on 25 April at 4:30 pm at Friargate Theatre, will be followed by a Q&A session with the creative team and Philip Parr, Director of the Festival.
