Attic Arts is a residency programme at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London offering time (up to 2 months) and space (the bohemian attic room of the Institute) for Romanian artists from various humanist fields to work in a major urban centre that provides a distinctive mix of cultures, of ethnic communities, of tradition and innovation in the realms of art, performance, technology, media and urban planning. The artists have the opportunity to experience the unique London environment, research innovative ideas, create new work and network with professionals in the field.
Concurrently, the resident artists will create work inspired by the local cultural context, which will subsequently be presented in the ICR London space or external premises as appropiate.
Goals of the Programme
- to create opportunities for Romanian artists to engage directly with British cutting-edge art scene and develop a partnership project on a previously identified theme
- to create an ICR London based pool of artworks and projects, which can be subsequently presented through the ICR global network, showcasing Romanian creativity to Western audiences
- to foster dialogue and extend professional networks between Romanian and British cultural producers
- to raise the profile of the London Romanian Cultural Institute in Romania and in the UK as a valuable partner for collaborative art programmes
What we offer
- travel grant up to 500 Euro for international flight or rail ticket
- residency grant of 1050 Euro / month for living expenses
- travel grant of 150 Euro / month for local transport On top of this, ICR provides up to 2 months accommodation in the bohemian attic room of the Institute in 1 Belgrave Square.
- the opportunity to create work inspired by and for the ICR London space
- the opportunity to spend creative time in the friendly environment of the Romanian Cultural Institute in London in 1 Belgrave Square, next door to Buckingham Palace, Royal Albert Hall and the Serpentine Gallery
- the opportunity to experiment new possibilities and directions in the production of collaborative work with British fellow artists
Who can apply? Any Romanian who:
- is pursuing projects in visual arts, curating, design, architecture, creative writing, journalism, music, ethnography, film, performing arts, cultural management and new media
Selection Criteria
- full project proposal (application form)
- relevance of the project to current approaches in the field
- ability to communicate in Romanian and English
- ability to identify partnerships or collaborations with individual artists or organizations from Great Britan, with whom can start or develop a project
- preparedness to deliver within of 3 months of the residency completion an innovative artwork or project to be shown on ICR London or external premises as appropriate
The selection of applicants is made by a board chaired by the Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in London.
Application deadlines: Given further refurbishment plans of the building, Attic Arts is currently on hold, expected to resume in June 2008.
