In the context of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Romania and China, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Beijing, in partnership with Switch Lab, organized the first exhibition by a Romanian artist at China's most prestigious contemporary art institution, CAFA Art Museum.
The exhibition, titled The Sublime, created by visual artist Dani Ghercă, was inaugurated on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 3:00 PM. The opening ceremony was attended by the artist Dani Ghercă, CAFA leadership, Romanian diplomats, and over 150 visitors, including artists, art critics, university professors, and students. Opening speeches were delivered by H.E. Mr. Dan-Horia Maxim, Ambassador of Romania to the People's Republic of China; Mr. Jin Jun, Director of CAFA Art Museum; Mr. Liviu Țăranu, Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Beijing; and Dani Ghercă, the author of the Sublime exhibition. The event was moderated by Ms. Gao, Deputy Director of the CAFA Art Museum, with translation provided by Liu Yizhe.
Following the official opening, the artist conducted a guided tour of the exhibition. The inaugural event also included a thematic conference, Photography in the Era of Digital Screens, held from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM, offering a platform for conceptual and aesthetic discussions related to the themes of the exhibition. Participants included five other Chinese artists and art critics: Prof. Yao Lu, photographer and doctoral coordinator at CAFA, renowned for his contributions to contemporary visual art; Dr. Chi Peng, an expert in design studies focusing on children's education, contemporary art, and film research; Liu Ke, Associate Professor and Master's Supervisor at the School of New Media Art and Design, Beihang University; and Li Xinduo, Assistant Professor and Master's Supervisor at the Digital Media Art Program, Beijing Jiaotong University. The conference was moderated by Liu Xiyan, Associate Researcher and Head of the Curatorial Research Department at CAFA Art Museum, with translation by Liu Yizhe. Over 60 students from CAFA and BJTU attended the conference.
The Sublime exhibition by Dani Ghercă features five monumental works (2x3 meters) projected on LED panels, consisting of aerial photographs of metropolitan architecture captured during his artist residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai. The works explore the impact of technology on human interactions and the concept of "sublime" in contemporary urban landscapes in China. By delving into these complex artificial landscapes, Ghercă's pieces simultaneously evoke awe and unease, highlighting the tensions arising from the rapid transformations of the modern world. The exhibition offers a profound reflection on the relationship between urban spaces and the aesthetic, social, and technological experiences that define them.
Located in the main lobby of the CAFA Art Museum, the exhibition will be open until December 15, 2024.
The project is organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute in Beijing in partnership with Switch Lab, CAFA, and Beijing Jiaotong University, and is co-financed by the National Cultural Fund Administration.
The event was promoted through the online platforms of the Romanian Cultural Institute/ICR Beijing, CAFA, and on both local and international social media networks.
