The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tokyo, in collaboration with the Embassy of Romania to Japan, is honored to announce Romania’s official participation in EU Film Days 2026, the premier event dedicated to European cinema in the Japanese archipelago.
This year’s edition, organized and co-funded by theDelegation of the European Union to Japan,EUNIC Tokyo,EUNIC Romania, embassies, institutes and cultural centres in Japan, features an impressive selection of 26 films. Romania will be represented by the multi-award-winning film „Three Kilometres to the End of the World” (2024), directed by Emanuel Pârvu.
The inclusion of this production — which was part of the official selection at Cannes — in the festival program reaffirms the prestige of the Romanian „New Wave” and the Japanese public’s interest in profound perspectives on contemporary society.
The festival will open on May 16, 2026, in Tokyo, and throughout the summer, the film caravan will make stops in Japan’s major cultural centres.
l Tokyo (May 16–29): Screenings at Theater Image Forum (Shibuya) and the National Film Archive of Japan (NFAJ), where a section of European classics will also be presented.
l Nagoya (June 6–19): The festival continues at Nagoya Cinema School.
l National Tour (July–August): The film caravan will visit the Hiroshima Film Archive, the Kyoto Museum, and the Fukuoka Public Library.
The screening of Emanuel Pârvu’s film in Japan strengthens bilateral cultural ties and offers audiences an authentic, internationally acclaimed cinematic experience.

Synopsis: Adi is a 17-year-old teenager from a village in the Danube Delta who, thanks to his parents’ efforts, attends school in Tulcea. Returning home for summer vacation, Adi feels at ease with his family and his best friend, Ilinca. When the family is violently confronted with a truth they can neither understand nor accept, the unconditional love Adi should receive from his parents suddenly vanishes, and Adi is left with only one solution.
