Japan through Romanian Eyes . The Translator’s Tightrope: Between Words and Worlds

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, starting at 6:00 p.m., ICR Tokyo will host the second installment of the series “Japan through Romanian Eyes” at the Romanian Embassy in Japan. The event will be titled “The Translator’s Tightrope: Between Words and Worlds” and will bring together specialists who translate from Japanese into Romanian and from Romanian into Japanese. The discussions in this edition will be moderated by Prof. Irina Holca and will focus on the challenges and rewards of the translator’s profession.

The special guests for this episode are:

Roman Pașca – professor at Akita University and translator into Romanian of many novels by Ōe Kenzaburō, Tanizaki Jun’ichirō, and other leading Japanese authors.

Shiga Shigehito – the translator who adapted numerous plays by Matei Vișniec into Japanese, which were subsequently staged by the KAZE repertory theater in Japan.

The project “Japan through Romanian Eyes” aims to show the public how local cultural landmarks are successfully assimilated and practiced by Romanians living in Japan, as well as by Japanese specialists passionate about our culture. Over the course of several editions, the initiative brings together, in a hybrid format (in-person and online), professionals who excel in fields that draw on elements specific to both cultures.

The first meeting in the series took place on April 3, and the last one will be held on July 11, 2026, also at the Romanian Embassy in Japan.
