One of the representative office’s strategic priorities, included in the annual plan, is Priority Area 4: Romanian Language, Multilingualism, and Multiculturalism, which includes Action Area 1: organizing Romanian language and culture courses for foreigners and administering exams to certify the language skills acquired by course participants.
In accordance with this strategic direction, the representative office organized, between April and November 2025, two online Romanian language courses for beginners at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (KCUFS) and Shizuoka, in collaboration with the Shizuoka-Romania Japanese Cultural Exchange Association (29 students).
In 2026, ICR Tokyo is supporting the organization of three Romanian language courses—two beginner courses (KCUFS and Shizuoka) and one intermediate course (Shizuoka). As in the previous year, the courses are held from April to November, online, and are taught by Prof. Dr. Yusuke Sumi—director of the Japanese Cultural Center at Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB) in Cluj-Napoca.
Driven by the expansion of the Romanian Cultural Institute’s (RCI) programs, interest in the Romanian language has grown significantly. To meet this demand, short-term (one-year) beginner courses have been introduced in regions with active Romanian-Japanese exchanges. This initiative ensures continuous learning while further strengthening the cultural bridge between Romania and Japan.
Furthermore, an ALTE certification exam session is scheduled for this year to officially validate these newly acquired language skills. Organized through the strategic partnership between the Romanian Cultural Institute and Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB) Cluj-Napoca, this milestone event marks a first for the region. Notably, it will also facilitate official language certification for diplomatic staff within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). (https://roexam.com/ )
