„Traditions and perspectives in the history of Jewish art”, international conference, Bar-Ilan University, September 10-12, 2012.

The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv and the Department of Jewish Art of the Bar-Ilan University proudly invite researchers, art critics, students and the public to the international conference entitled “Traditions and perspectives in the history of Jewish art”. The event will take place between September 10-12, 2012 at the Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan.
The international conference, “Traditions and perspectives in the history of Jewish art”, is a major academic event which brings together more than 50 specialists from 12 countries, among them being Spain, USA, The Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Poland, Israel and Romania. The participants will present lectures dealing with a wide variety of themes, ranging from Art and architecture of Jewish sacred spaces, the place of biblical texts and the Hebrew script in visual arts, Jerusalem and the Holy Land as an object and model in visual arts, to images of Jews in visual arts and patrons, collectors and museums of Jewish art.
The conference includes an opening lecture on the adaptation of pagan motifs in ancient synagogues mosaics by Prof. Moshe Idel (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem).

On September 10th at 16:00 will take place a panel entitled “The Romanian-Jewish discourse” chaired by Dr. Gina Pană, the director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv.

Participants in the conference from Romania: Constantin Ciobanu, researcher at the “George Oprescu” History of Art Institute in the Romanian Academy, and Tereza Sinigalia, Prof.univ.dr. at the “George Enescu” University of Arts in Iași and researcher at the “George Oprescu” History of Art Institute. The Romanian guests will deliver lectures on: Adam's Languages: Hebrew imaginary writings in Romanian medieval monumental painting (Constantin Ciobanu) and The twelve tribes of Ancient Israel in the murals of Sucevița and Dragomirna churches (Tereza Sinigalia).

Within the same panel, there will be present also Prof. Ilia Rodov, the Department of Jewish Art of the Bar-Ilan University, with a lecture entitled Images of Theophany in Romanian Synagogues.
