Romanian films at the Haifa International Film Festival, October 15-24, 2016

The Haifa International Film Festival will take place between October 15-24, 2016 and will include in the international program no less than four Romanian films. In addition to that, there will be a special tribute section in the program dedicated to one of the most talented directors of the new Romanian cinema - Cristian Mungiu

Films that will be premiered at the festival: Scarred hearts, director Radu Jude (Romania, 2015), Illegitimate, director Adrian Sitaru (Romania, 2016), Dogs, director Bogdan Mirică (Romania, 2016) and Graduation, director Cristian Mungiu (Romania, 2016).

As part of the Cristian Mungiu Tribute section, there will also be screened the films Beyond the hills (Romania, 2012) - 15.10.2016, at 14:00, Haifa Cinematheque, and 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days (Romania, 2007) - 15.10.2016, at 17:00, Haifa Cinematheque.

With the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, Adrian Titieni, lead actor of the films Illegitimate and Graduation will be present at the festival and will participate at the Q&A sessions after the screenings in the period 18-20.10.2016.

Synopsis: Romania, 1937. Emanuel, a 20-year-old young man, spends his days at a sanatorium on the Black Sea coast, suffering from bone tuberculosis. Falling in love with another patient, he narrates his and his fellow patients' attempts to live life to the fullest as their bodies slowly fade away, but their minds refuse to give up. Inspired by Romanian author Max Blecher's autobiographical novel Scarred Hearts, written before he died, after ten years of suffering, at the age of 29 years.

Synopsis: Two siblings and an illegitimate love. A father who's a doctor and several accusations. A family in which no one ever drew a line between what's moral and what's legal. Not even when it comes to abortion.

Synopsis: Roman - a young man from the city - comes to a remote village in rural Romania to sell the land he inherited from his departed grandfather. Once there, Roman is exposed to a series of strange events, all culminating with him discovering that his grandfather used to be a local crime lord.

Synopsis: Romeo Aldea (49), a physician living in a small mountain town in Transylvania, has raised his daughter Eliza with the idea that once she turns 18, she will leave to study and live abroad. His plan is close to succeeding - Eliza has won a scholarship to study psychology in the UK. She just has to pass her final exams - a formality for such a good student. On the day before her first written exam, Eliza is assaulted in an attack that could jeopardize her entire future. Now Romeo has to make a decision. There are ways of solving the situation, but none of them using the principles he, as a father, has taught his daughter.

The Haifa International Film Festival, the leading cinematic event in Israel, was founded in 1983 as the first international film festival in the country. Growing steadily in both the number of screenings and attendance, Haifa IFF has earned a world-wide reputation for both the quality of its program and the friendly atmosphere

The festival brings together each year an ever-growing audience along with hundreds of Israeli and foreign professionals from the film and television industries and offers 280 screenings of new films from around the world, including 70 Israeli productions. 300,000 people in total take part in the activities of the Festival, including the outdoor events, screenings, workshops and more, and dozens of journalists from both the print and broadcast media, from Israel and abroad, cover the event.

The Festival makes its home in the city of Haifa, that has become a symbol of  co-existence, tolerance and peace, ideals that the Festival wholeheartedly promotes.
