100 de ani de cinematografie românească

The November focus of our Romanian Cinematheque is ꞌA Century of Romanian Cinemaꞌ. Film critic and historian Manuela Cernat joins directors Ioan Cărmăzan and Laurențiu Damian in welcoming cinephiles to three evenings of old and new films that draw the map of Greater Romania through personal stories and documentaries.

The event celebrates the Great Union Centenary (1918-2018) and follows the ‘Romanian History Film Days in Belgravia’ (22-24 November), organized in partnership with Râșnov Film and History Festival.

Forgotten by God / Rămânerea (1992, dir. Laurențiu Damian)

Followed by Q&A with director Laurențiu Damian

Pavel returns home, to his village, somewhere on the banks of the Danube. He is the last descendant of a family that had fallen victim to a dreaded curse: old Anghel, in his pride, built his house higher than the church. The curse seems to have spread over the entire village that is now deserted, forgotten by the world and by God. Pavel remembers the dramatic moments that marked the existence of his family and those around him, moments that coincide with the crucial events in everyone’s life - birth, marriage, death. After this time incursion, the hero remains surrounded by the shadows of the past, obsessed with the image of the deserted village and feeling useless.
With Monica Ghiuta, Mircea Albulescu, Maia Morgenstern. Running time: 104'
