The documentary exhibition “7 Jewish Pioneers of Modern Architecture in Romania” and Romanian participation at ECOWEEK 2019

The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, in collaboration with The Architects’ Union in Romania, The Association of Architects and Town Planners and ECOWEEK 2019, is organizing the documentary exhibition “7 Jewish Pioneers of Modern Architecture in Romania”, which will be presented between September 3-19, 2019, at The Architect's House Gallery (15 HaMigdalor St., Jaffa), as part of the international program of the 2019 edition of ECOWEEK.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Tuesday, September 3, at 19:00, in the presence of representatives of The Architects’ Union in Romania and The Association of Architects and Town Planners in Israel.

"The architecture of Romanian Modernism is one of the best-kept secrets of the Early Modern period". This documentary exhibition reveals the contribution of major importance to Romanian architecture of several Jewish architects, important figures for the history of interwar architecture, such as Marcel lancu, Rudolf Frankel, Marcel Mailer, Isak Mahler, Jean Monda, Boris Zilberman and Herman Clejan. Their architectural work is exemplified through iconic structures and buildings which they have created in Romania and, in particular, in Bucharest – from a small fragment of what once was the Jewish Neighborhood and that partially escaped the mass demolition during the 80's to landmarks of Romanian society such as Scala Building or the Predeal Sanatorium. Many of the buildings presented in this project are included in the List of Historical Monuments and some, sadly, are no longer standing. In the vast development of industrial buildings and population growth, some of these buildings are left abandoned, robbing the public space of a part of its identity and history. One of the purposes of this project is to raise awareness on the matter and to help find a way of preserving this part of the cultural and historical patrimony of Romania.

The transport of the exhibition to Israel is supported by TAROM National Airline.

With the support of RCI Tel Aviv, Prof. arch. Lorin Niculae will participate in the annual ECOWEEK design and architecture workshops taking place in Israel since 2008. The workshops take place in several cities in Israel and they engage students of architecture and design from Israel and abroad. The workshops in September 1-6, 2019 are scheduled to take place in Holon, Kfar Saba, and Ashdod. The projects, which are based on actual site and program considerations in each city, involve the local municipalities who are active partners in the workshop process.
