"Salvation" to Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival

Salvation, directed by Tom Nicoll, has been selected for the Discovery programme at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which highlights exciting new voices in international cinema.

Sound designer Marian Bălan will attend the world premiere of Salvation at TIFF, one of the world’s leading international film festivals, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute. The film’s creative team also includes editor Raluca Petre and cinematographer Alex Grigoraș.

The team’s participation at the Toronto International Film Festival, taking place from 10–20 September 2026, represents an important chance for professional and artistic recognition, as well as an opportunity to connect with the international film industry. Being selected for the Discovery programme represent for the emerging filmmakers a great way to reach new audiences and gain visibility among the press and industry professionals.

An independent production by Lane Films, supported by Creative Scotland and made largely through the filmmakers’ own resources, Salvation marks Tom Nicoll’s feature-film debut. The film will screen at Scotiabank Theatre Toronto on 11, 12, 13 and 18 September 2026.

Salvation was previously presented at Cannes as part of the Great 8 Showcase by the British Film Institute and the British Council. The cast includes Liam Harkins, Stephen McMillan, Kathleen McDermott and Conor McCarron.

Set in a post-industrial Scottish town, Salvation follows Danny, a young man trying to build a career as an online motivational mentor. Burdened by debts accumulated after the failure of his business, he begins to take increasingly risky measures to keep his ambitions alive. Blending tension with dark humour, the film explores the world of motivational influencers and the search for meaning among young people drawn to the promise of fast success. The result is a clear-eyed, tender and deeply empathetic portrait of a generation struggling to find its way.
