The Romanian Cultural Institute in Beijing is pleased to announce the organization of two remarkable events dedicated to Queen Marie, one of the most influential personalities of Romania in the 20th century, known for her role in the Great Union of 1919 as well as her significant contributions in the fields of literature and arts.
The performance "1919 Royal Mission"
- Date and Time: Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 7:00 PM, at the ICR Beijing headquarters in Galaxy SOHO
- Description: A stage adaptation by actress Liana Ceterchi, based on the diaries of Queen Marie and the work "The Later Chapters of My Life". This unique one-woman show encompasses the tumultuous year of 1919, during which Queen Marie, having survived the Spanish flu, embarks on an unofficial diplomatic mission to the Paris Peace Conference and then on a diplomatic tour in England. Returning to the country, alongside King Ferdinand, she undertakes a grand tour in Transylvania, newly annexed to Romania. The opening of the first Parliament of Greater Romania, representing all regions/provinces of the country, is then depicted, culminating with the memorable date of October 15, 1922, the coronation at Alba Iulia.
- Liana Ceterchi: An actress and theater director, born on April 3, 1955, in Cluj-Napoca. She graduated from the Institute of Theatre and Film Arts in 1978, acting department, and UNATC in 1998, theater directing department. Besides a rich career at the Mic Theatre, she has acted in famous Romanian films such as: "Cuibul salamandrelor", "Ecaterina Teodoroiu" (1978), "Drumul oaselor" (1980), "Orgolii" (1981), "Șantaj" (1982), "Omul zilei" (1997), "Regal" (2010), etc.
The conference "An Insight into the Life and Writings of Queen Marie"
- Date and Time: Monday, May 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM, at the University of Foreign Languages and Cultures in Beijing (BLCU)
- Description: The conference will be held by assoc. prof. dr. Cristina Ungureanu, and will offer an in-depth analysis of the life and works of Queen Marie, highlighting her contributions to Romanian culture and literature, as well as her role on the international political stage.
- Cristina Ungureanu: An associate professor at the Faculty of Foreign Languages within the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest, she is the author of two books of analysis and introspection: "Mystery and Meaning in My Life Story, Queen Marie's Masterpiece", Bucharest, Curtea Veche Publishing, 2021 and "Romania through Queen Marie's Eyes. Identity and Self Identification", Cluj Napoca, Casa Cărții de Știință Publishing, 2022.
Through these events, we aim to emphasize not only Queen Marie's importance as a historical figure but also as a symbol of dedication to culture and education. The events are part of our ongoing efforts to promote Romanian culture internationally, recognizing those who have shaped our country's cultural and historical identity.
