Series of events celebrating the Day of the Romanian Army

The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv wishes to pay tribute to the Jewish soldiers and doctors who fought bravely in the Romanian Army during the First World War, while celebrating October 25, the Day of the Romanian Army. 2018 is a special year, marking both 100 years of the creation of Great Romania and, as well as 70 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations between Romania and Israel.

To this purpose, the RCI, together with the Office of the Military Attaché of the Romanian Embassy to the State of Israel, organizes a series of events, as following:
- on October 23rd, at 18:00, at the RCI headquarter (8 Shaul Hamelech blvd., 6th floor), a Romanian-held symposium about ”The Romanian Army in the Great War” (by historian Manuel Stănescu) and ”The Jewish soldiers in the Great War” (by researcher Irina Spirescu), followed by the movie screening ”Jewish heroes in the First World War”, directed by Sorin Avram and a photo exhibition showing archive images;
- on October 24th, at 18:00, at the Haganah Museum in Tel Aviv (23 Rothschild blvd.): in addition to the opening of the photo exhibition showing archive images from the First World War, the evening also includes a symposium held in English about ”The Romanian Army in the Great War”, by historian Manuel Stănescu, ”The Jewish soldiers in the Great War”, by researcher Irina Spirescu and a presentation by Alex Bokser, historian at the Haganah Museum.

The pictures included in the exhibition depict Jewish soldiers and doctors in the service of the Romanian Army. Their contribution in the battlefield was well-known: Jewish doctors, along with their Romanian ethnic peers, assured the army's combat capacity, made efforts to stop the death toll, limited the effects of defeats, enclosed and extinguished the typhus epidemic. Thus, they fulfilled their duty to the country, facing dangers on the front line.

For this special occasion, the Romanian Cultural Institute is honored to initiate a collaboration with the Haganah Museum, and in the same time to have the support of very important Romanian museum and centers, such as: the Institute for Political Studies of Defense and Military History, the National Military Museum of Romania, the Center for the History of Romanian Jewry, the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania and the Museum of the City of Bucharest.
