„Abraham Goldfaden and Theater as Identity”, lecture by Dr. Anca Mocanu (25.03.2014, at 16:00, Bar Ilan University)

The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, in collaboration with the „Rena Costa” Center for Yiddish Studies - Bar Ilan University, are organising the seminar Abraham Goldfaden, the Founder of the Modern Yiddish Theater. Romania, 1876. The seminar will take place on March 25th, 2014, at 16:00, in Room 328 - Library of the “Rina Costa” Center for Yiddish Studies, Buidling 410 - Judaic Studies, Bar Ilan University. Within the framework of the seminar, Dr. Anca Mocanu (Romania) will deliver the lecture Abraham Goldfaden and Theater as Identity, in English language.The seminar is open to Bar Ilan students, as well as to the general public.

On 26.03.2014, Dr. Anca Mocanu will attend professional meetings with the Yiddishpiel Theater’s managing board and actors.


The study "Avram Goldfaden and Theater as Identity" represents the monographic journey of Avram Goldfaden (1840-1908) who, in 1876, at Iaşi, founded the first Yiddish theatre in the world, marking for eternity a national and an international moment. Gravitating around the concept of identity, within its contents, the study presents the founding concepts, the traits of the artist and dramatist, as well as the theatrical companies he managed and the various influences of his theatrical concepts.

Anca Mocanu is a Romanian theater researcher and critic. She graduated in 2003 the “I. L. Caragiale” National University of Theater Arts and Cinematography and in 2006 the Interdisciplinary M. A. at the Center for Proficiency in the Study of the Image (CESI), a joint program of the Bucharest University and “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism. In 2011 she received her PhD in the field of theater studies. Currently she is a theater critic for leading Romanian magazines such as Drama, Jewish Reality and Theater Today.
