August 23- November 11 | University of Iowa Alina Nelega in Residency with Iowa International Writing Program & Readings in Iowa, Portland and New York
The International Writing Program at the University of Iowa is a unique residency program that brings together writers from all over the world. Founded in 1967, the IWP was the first international writers' residency at a university, and remains exceptional in world literature. Nominated for the Nobel Prize for Peace, the IWP brings together established writers of many nations to the University of Iowa, where they become part of a lively literary community on campus. More than a thousand writers from more than 100 countries have completed residencies in the Iowa program.
Alina Nelega, a celebrated Romanian playwright and novelist, has been selected from hundreds of writers world-wide to take part in the 2008 IWP residency. This opportunity will allow Alina to finish a theatre play that she has developed for the past five years, and to present it in a series of workshops and readings hosted by the University of Iowa, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York. The IWP readings are taking place on a regular basis from September until the end of the residency program on November 10.
At the end of her IWP residency, invited by Portland Stage Company in its From Away Festival, respectively by New York Theatre Workshop, Alina Nelega will read excerpts of "Just Vinyl" in both Portland (November 10) and New York (November 17).
