Emil Cioran - International Francophonie Day

The Embassy of Romania in the Czech Republic and the Romanian Cultural Institute in Prague invite you to the event dedicated to Emil Cioran on the occasion of the  International Francophonie Day, which will take place on March 17th, 2016, at 6p.m., at the French Institute in Prague (KINO 35, Štěpánská 644/35, 111 21 Prague 1). This year it is the anniversary of 105 years from Emil Cioran's birthday in Răşinari, Sibiu county.

The program will start with a conference about Emil Cioran and his work (in French), held by George Banu, professor from Sorbonne University, connaisseur of Cioran's work, who received the Francophonie Award from the French Academy  in 2014. After having published five volumes in Romanian, Cioran adopted French language for his writings and became famous for his remarcable style, full of incredible subtlety and remarcable aesthetics.

The conference will be followed by a screening of the documentary film The Apocalypse According to Cioran / Apocalipsa după Cioran by Gabriel Liiceanu and Sorin Ilieșiu, Paris, 1990 (with French subtitles) commented upon by Mr. Sorin Ilieşiu. The film offers an opportunity to meet the philosopher Emil Cioran, in his attic apartment in Paris and in his favourite places, but also a return to the "Lost Paradise", to his childhood in Sibiu, where he never came back. The film presents Cioran the man, the thinker who has a great sense of humour, shortly before he left us for good, in 1995.

At the same time, in the foyer of the French Institute, there will be exhibited a selection of Cioran's books.

The evening will end by a cocktail offered by the Embassy of Romania in the Czech Republic and the Romanian Cultural Institute in Prague, an occasion to continue the discussions about the philosopher's writings.
