An event organised to celebrate Constantin Brâncuși Day. Part of Brâncuși 150 Season at RCI London
In 2026, marking 150 years since the birth of Constantin Brâncuși, universally regarded as the patriarch of modern sculpture, the Romanian Cultural Institute in London dedicates an entire season of events to the life and legacy of this seminal artist. Declared nationally as the Year of Brâncuși, 2026 offers a unique opportunity to revisit his artistic vision through contemporary, interdisciplinary perspectives.
Opening the Brâncuși 150 Season, the Romanian Cultural Institute in London, in collaboration with the Municipality of Târgu Jiu, presents an immersive and multidisciplinary event hosted throughout the Institute’s historic building at 1 Belgrave Square. Conceived as a journey through space, light and sound, the programme features virtuoso violinist Alexandru Tomescu and internationally acclaimed pianist Sînziana Mircea, and designers Alina Moise and Iustin Băisan in an event that unfolds across all public areas of the Institute, inviting audiences to experience Brâncuși’s universe through classical music live performances, design, and photography.
First Floor – Enescu Hall
In the World of Brâncuși
Classical Music Recital with Video Projections
On the first floor, in the Enescu Hall, the audience is invited to a classical music recital entitled In the World of Brâncuși, inspired by the sculptor’s passions, inner world and cultural roots. The recital is performed by renowned violinist Alexandru Tomescu and pianist Sînziana Mircea and is enhanced by video projections featuring powerful photographic images by Ioana Hameeda, created during the Stradivarius Tour in Târgu Jiu and Hobița. The musical programme brings together traditional and classical works that resonate with Brâncuși’s artistic ethos, including Romanian folk inspiration and European modernism, with compositions by Manuel de Falla, Béla Bartók and George Enescu.
PROGRAMME:
Ciuleandra - folkloric composition
Manuel de Falla - "Spanish Folk Suite"
Bela Bartok - Six Romanian Dances
George Enescu - Violin Sonata No. 3 in A minor, Op. 25 "In Romanian Folk Style"
Ground Floor – Immersive Design Exhibition
Endless Light & Sculpture Garden
by Project Para (Alina Moise & Iustin Băisan)
Upon entering the Institute, visitors are welcomed in the grand entrance hall and the Brâncuși Gallery by Endless Light & Sculpture Garden, an immersive design installation by Project Para studio Bucharest. Inspired by Brâncuși’s lifelong pursuit of essential form, the exhibition transforms the space into a quiet, contemplative homage, guiding the visitor from matter to light, from object to the idea of the infinite column. A luminous 3D installation evoking The Endless Column introduces the exhibition and leads into the main gallery. Here, visitors are met by a sculptural landscape in which 3D-printed objects inspired by Brâncuși’s archetypal forms are arranged alongside organic elements. Created entirely from recycled materials, these pieces reinterpret Brâncuși’s language of reduction, purity and clarity through contemporary digital fabrication and sustainable design practices.
In a dedicated talk, designers Alina Moise and Iustin Băisan will explore the creative process behind the exhibition, the influence of Brâncuși’s work on contemporary design, and the role of sustainability, material reduction and digital narratives in today’s artistic practice. The exhibition is accompanied by an original sound installation by London-based Romanian sound designer Vlad Dodoiu. Using authentic stereo recordings captured in the Central Park of Târgu Jiu, the work recreates the natural soundscape surrounding Brâncuși’s sculptural ensemble — birds, air, ambient movement — subtly grounding the visual experience in the artist’s spiritual and geographical origins.
Opening Addresses
The evening will open with remarks by H.E. Laura Popescu, the Romanian Ambassador in London, Adrian Tudor-Drăghici, Deputy Mayor of Târgu Jiu, and RCI London director Aura Woodward.
Through design, sound, image and music, this immersive event offers a contemporary homage to Constantin Brâncuși, reaffirming his timeless influence and opening new pathways for engaging with his legacy in the heart of London.
