The Knesset will display the art exhibition titled "How Was It Possible?", dedicated to the memory of the Romanian Holocaust victims, during the week of October 24-31, 2010. Following the initiative of the Israeli Parliamentary Association for Holocaust Remembrance and Aid to Survivors, a special session will take place in the Jerusalem Hall of the Knesset on Wednesday, October 27, 10:20 AM to 12:20 PM.
This exhibition of paintings is the result of seven young Romanian artists' works from the first edition (2009) of the Borsec Creation Summer Camp, organized by the "Elie Wiesel" National Institute for the Holocaust Studies in Romania: George Anghelescu, Mariana Cîmpeanu, Ioana Gorzo, Adrian Popescu, Adrian Preda, Oana Sfetcu, Simona Vilău.
The President of the Knesset, Reuven Rivlin, and MK Ilan Gilon, have facilitated the presentation of the paintings by the Romanian Cultural Institute at the Israeli Parliament.
The exhibition will be open to the public at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, November 1-30, 2010.
CONFERENCES
In commemoration of the Day of Holocaust in Romania, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv will organize two conferences delivered by dr. Alexandru Florian, executive director of the "Elie Wiesel" Institute, as follows:
October 26, 5:00 PM (The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, Shaul Hamelech Blvd. 8), conference entitled: "The National Institute for Holocaust Studies in Romania "Elie Wiesel" and the Memory of the Victims" – guest: prof. dr. Raphael Vago, History Department, Tel Aviv University.
October 28, 5:00 PM (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Yitzhak Rabin Building, Mount Scopus Campus, Room 3001), proceedings on: "Perceptions on the Holocaust in Romania within the Public Space" – guests: dr. Leon Volovici, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, prof. dr. Liviu Rotman, National School of Political Studies and Public Administration in Bucharest, director of the Institute for Jewish History in Romania.
The conferences language will be Romanian.
Dr. Alexandru Florian is the executive director of the "Elie Wiesel" National Institute for Holocaust Studies in Romania and lecturer at the Department of political science of the "Dimitrie Cantemir" University.
Author of books, studies, essays, and research articles, Dr. Florian is affiliated with civic and scientific associations, including the Center for Monitoring and Combating Anti-Semitism (MCA), the Association for "Romanian Jewish Cultural Heritage", the Romanian UNESCO Commission, and many others.
Among his most important published works are: Foundations of Political Doctrines, University Press, Bucharest, 2006, Political Models of Transition, GEEA Press, Bucharest, 2004, Romania and the Transition Traps, Diogene Press, Bucharest, 1999.
The Romanian State has assumed responsibility for the tragedy of the Holocaust in Romania and the culpability of Ion Antonescu's government in the deaths of approximately 300,000 Jewish Romanian citizens.
As the result of the Report presented by the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania, chaired by Elie Wiesel, to the Romanian Parliament, October 9th was designated as the Holocaust Memorial Day in Romania.
Additionally, the 'Elie Wiesel' National Institute for Holocaust Studies was created, under the auspices of the Romanian Ministry of Culture, and a Holocaust memorial has also been established in Bucharest.
