"In truth, Romanian society has a strong left-wing bent. A complete turnaround compared with the situation extant before communism. At that time, Romania inclined to the right, because it was a country of landowners, big and small (in particular peasants). Communism crushed property and taught people to become dependent on the state. Today, the assistance of the state is still preferred to the risk of free initiative. Not even the reconstitution of rural estate up to fifty hectares stirred the expected enthusiasm. In the villages only the aging population remained, and the inhabitants, though in possession of land, have neither money, nor agricultural machinery. Most Romanians are content with the status of assisted people, or compelled by poverty to accept it, therefore they vote for the left, for a state that has control over the economy and assures them a minimal subsistence."
