Launch of the European Alternatives Journal

Photos by Cosmin Bumbut and Iosif Kiraly

Question: What is Europe? Answer: It is an intellectually fascinating concept that carries political and social implications in and for the world. So says European Alterities, a non-profit cultural organisation dedicated to opening-up spaces for discussion of Europe and to promoting cultural exchange.

The organization's latest attempt to open up such public spaces is the new cultural journal "European Alternatives" published with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute.

This journal aims to provide space for intellectual and artistic projections of Europe as a whole, articles on specific issues within Europe, plus essays, reviews and interviews on the arts, literatures and cultures of Europe.

The first issue includes a special section dedicated to Romania with contributions from former Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, on "Romania & the EU", and acclaimed film critic, Alex Leo Serban, on "The New Romanian Cinema". Original photographs are kindly supplied by Romanian artists Cosmin Bumbut and Iosif Kiraly.

The launch will be featuring a Romanian Jazz/Folklore concert by Monica Madas and Sebastian Heroiu. Two artists play with music and visuals.

Monica Madas is a puppeteer and jazz singer. She's a voice with something to say. Her music is a very original mix of jazz and traditional Romanian songs. She has been invited to various London shows at Battersea Barge, Proud Gallery in Camden Town and Café Royal.

Sebastian Heroiu is a visual artist making illustrations, animations and photography. He is involved in various projects in cinematography, graphic design and advertising.
