A debate exploring new interactions between artistic and political practices. What is the social role of the artist? What is the political relevance of the contemporary work of art? With a special focus on the current Eastern European artistic reality.
Speakers include: Hans Ulrich Obrist (Director of International Projects, Serpentine Gallery), Sarah Wilson (Lecturer in Art History, Courtauld Institute of Art), Cosmin Costinas (freelance writer and curator, Romania). With the participation of artists Pawel Leszkowicz & Tomek Kitlinsky (Poland) and Cosmin Bumbut (Romania).
Romanian contributor Cosmin Costinas will examine "Why Eastern Europe doesn't make sense anymore - if it ever did". The programme includes a multimedia presentation with photographs by Cosmin Bumbut.
Cosmin Costinas is a writer, art critic and curator based in Vienna. He is currently researcher in residency at BAK Utrecht and contributing editor of the "Idea Arts + Society" (Cluj) and "Version" (Paris/Cluj) magazines as well as advisory board member of PATTERNS/ERSTE Foundation (Vienna). His curatorial projects include "Textground" (2004), "Secularity after Complicity" (2005), "After the Happy Nineties" (2005), "Tales from the Other Side" (2005). Cosmin Costinas was one of the editors of documenta 12 magazines (Vienna/Kassel).
Cosmin Bumbut is a prolific Romanian photographer with a strong international reputation. A graduate of the Theatre and Film Academy in Bucharest, he has won many awards for photography in Romania and abroad, such as the Outstanding Achievement at B&W Spider Awards, USA. Also, his book Transit won "Art Book of the Year" at the Romanian National Book Fair in 2003. He is currently developing photoreportage and social photography projects.
Between Arts and Politics: Eastern European Reflections is organised by European Alternatives in collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute in London.
