INFINITY. Brâncuși. UNESCO

The Romanian Cultural Institute in London marks the Constantin Brâncuși National Day with a celebration of the UNESCO listing of the Brâncuși Monumental Ensemble of Târgu Jiu.

The event will see the opening of a photographic exhibition featuring rare archive images from the Constantin Brâncuși Center for Research, Documentation and Promotion in Târgu Jiu, offering a unique glimpse into the artist’s creative process. These will be mirrored by two recent photographs taken right after the UNESCO inscription by London-based photographer Alexandru Radu Popescu. With opening remarks by Dr.Adrian Tudor, Vice-Mayor of Târgu Jiu.

"Understood as a fusion of Brâncuși’s unique object language, engineering and landscape architecture, the Târgu Jiu ensemble is perhaps the most enduring symbol of the sculptor’s vision. But its central motifs – theEndless Column, theKissand the millstone – originate in a studio practice which saw formal ideas developed and elaborated on a smaller, intimately human scale." - Dr. Jonathan Vernon

That's why we are also hosting a conversation exploring how the tactile and perceptual, sensuous and imaginative dimensions of Brâncuși’s work are realised across his world of forms – and how they have informed the practices of international and especially British artists since. From the public-scale works of Târgu Jiu to objects that fit in the palm of a hand, Brancusi’s work continues to shape how we think and make sculpture. Under the title "Brâncuși: From the Studio to Târgu Jiu", the panel discussion brings together visual artistDavid Ward and writer and curatorSam Cornish, moderated by Brâncuși expertJonathan Vernon.

Opening remarks: Dr.Adrian Tudor, Vice Mayor, Târgu Jiu City Hall.

The exhibition, organised in partnership with the Târgu Jiu City Hall and the Constantin Brâncuși Center for Research, Documentation and Promotion, will be open in RCI’s Brâncuși gallery until 4 March, Mon–Fri between 10 am and 4 pm.
