The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv is organizing on March 22nd, 2015 at 10:00, the conference “Romanians and Jews Facing the Great War” delivered by prof. Adrian Cioroianu at the Rabin Observatory of the Rabin Building at Haifa University.

The event, in English, is dedicated to marking 100 years since the beginning of the First World War, and will be attended by students and professors from the School of History, the Strochlitz Institute for Holocaust Research and The Weiss-Livnat International MA in Holocaust Studies of the Haifa University.

The lecture will explore the various situations of the Romanians and Jews during the Great War, from their identity status to their contribution and struggle in the historical background. The conference will also include references to the situation and life of the Romanian Jewry during the interwar period, as well as to the recent rise of Anti-Semitism and right wing parties in today’s Europe.



In order to mark 100 years since the beginning of the First World War, the RCI Publishing House has printed the bilingual volume The Great War. Photography from the Romanian front, 1916-1919 by Adrian-Silvan Ionescu.

Adrian Cioroianu is a Romanian professor, author, historian, journalist and essayist. He is currently a university professor and the Dean of the Faculty of History at the University of Bucharest. In 1993, he graduated from the Faculty of History at the University of Bucharest and holds both an MA degree and a Ph.D. in history from the Laval University in Quebec (Canada). His doctorate thesis was entitled “The myth, the image and the cult of the leader in communist Romania”.
Between 2007 and 2008 he was the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has hosted and produced various historical TV shows in Romania such as “Ora de istorie” (The history hour), "Chiasma. Dialoguri PAX" (Chiasma, dialogues), "Totul la vedere" (Everything in the open), “5 Minute de Istorie” (Five minutes of history) and “Ciocnirea civilizaţiilor” (The Clash of Civilizations).
He has published numerous articles and studies and is the author of books such as: Arhiva Durerii (The Pain Archive, Fundația Academia Civică Publishing House, 2000) – in collaboration with Lucian Boia and Tom Sandqvist; Focul ascuns în piatră.
