Insights into the History
of an Emotion Concept – Romanian patriotism // Gabriela Stoica, PhD // 20.09.2017 -18:00
The presentation deals with the diachronic evolution of a particular emotion concept, patriotism, delineated as such starting with the Early Modern period (1780-1840), as a consequence of the intersection with the Western European principles and philosophical ideas of the Enlightenment. Concepts like country[patrie], nation[naţie], people[neam] are (re)discovered and (re)valued and, accordingly, new associated emotions are being laid emphasis on: love of country, national prideetc. Patriotismbecomes a central emotion concept, undergoing lexical-semantic renewal and diversification; the lexicon of patriotismimplies old words, contextually reinvested (dragoste, iubire, etc.), as well as new terms, polysemous (amor, ardoare etc.) or conveying a very precise meaning (patriotism, patriot, nationalism, nationalist, filopatrieetc.). The semantic analysis of this lexicon in context (affective isotopies, lexical collocations, etc.), throws into prominence the saliency of patriotismwithin the cultural affective model of the Early Modern Romanian time.
Gabriela Stoica works as a PhD Lecturer within the Department of Linguistics of the Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest and as a researcher at the Institute of Linguistics “Iorgu Iordan – Al. Rosetti” of the Romanian Academy, Bucharest. She is the author of the books: Afect şi afectivitate. Conceptualizare şi lexicalizare în româna veche[Affect and affectivity. Conceptualization and lexicalization in Old Romanian],Bucharest, University of Bucharest Publishing House, 2012; Modele ale afectivităţii în cultura română premodernă (1780-1840)[Models of Affectivity in the Early Modern Romanian Culture], Bucharest, Muzeul Literaturii Române Publishing House, 2015, and of several papers dealing with the historical study of the affectivity and of the affective lexicon. Her scientific fields of interest are: history of Romanian language, historical lexicology and semantics, discourse analysis, cultural linguistics, anthropology and cultural history of emotions, Romanian as a foreign language.

Humour represents, in general, a marked communicative behaviour. The humorous utterances identified in our corpus have multiple functions, both extra- and interdiscursive. Extra discursively, they emphasize shared knowledge and values between the humour initiator and his public; simultaneously, the negative evaluations of the opponents convey intentional unmitigated face-threatening acts targeted to the out-group representatives. Interdiscursively, we shall focus on strategies and techniques frequently used in Romanian. In the political discourse, humour is a strategy of positively- and negatively-oriented relational management (we shall analyse both humour produced by politicians targeting other politicians and humour produced by lay persons targeting politicians or the political domain).
Mihaela-Viorica Constantinescu is PhD lecturer at the
Department of Linguistics, University of Bucharest. Teaching and research
interest: Pragmatics, Stylistics, Rhetoric, Argumentation, Romanian as a
foreign language. Member of a research group dealing with the study of the
Romanian parliamentary discourse. Publications: articles and studies in
peer-reviewed journals and collective volumes; two author books: on Romanian
political humour during the communist period – Umorul politic românesc în perioada comunistă. Perspective lingvistice
(2012), on im/politeness in the mid-nineteenth century Romanian Principalities
– Principatele române între Orient și
Occident: dinamica modelelor culturale ale politeții și impoliteții în secolul
al XIX-lea (revised edition 2016).
