About Mihail Sebastian

There may be nothing more seductive than man's attempt to reach the limit of the absolute, the fire and thrill of embodying the universal which confers sense and soundness to the human adventure. More so, as this endeavor begins with the accidental and ephemeral of the world. The glimpse of a horizon that excels, but also consecrates you, the tempo at which the relentless, overwhelming pulse of the world attains rhythm and meaning, the triumph of intervals and changes through the negation of limits (as things have, or are, more than birth and extinction), are moments, avatars of the being which, when assumed personally and thoroughly, untwine the rumor of what we usually call – in a loud voice – destiny.rnMore than anyone else, perhaps, Sebastian revealed this fact – that the individual relies on sought, revealed generality, through which he recovers both man's primitiveness as such, and the singularity and grace of his own way. In times when collective straying becomes a model of excellence, while the redundancy of personal foibles, if I may say so, is taken for authenticity and merit, Sebastian insists on the frontier that separates (yet brings closer) the isolated, subjective, wandering person to a more comprehensive and fertile principle. This may be seen in his books, and especially in his life. Love, friendship, understanding is sought beyond the particularities, complexity, idiosyncrasies or foolishness of characters and friends. For Sebastian, this quest is absolutely necessary for a better rediscovery and communion. Behind the impoverishing mechanics of men, he aims at Man's dynamics. Only thus does the encounter with the Other grow and occur in truth. This fever accompanied him throughout his life, knowing perhaps that its defeat was a harbinger of nonexistence. You start from the particular, somehow narrow, imperfect man, to end with the whole, finished one. This perfection implies a revelation of the deeper significance within each of us.
