The Night of the Bear

WORLD PREMIERE

Director: Paul-Răzvan Macovei

Cast: Vlad Bălan, Gabriel Huian, Alexandru Voicu

Three 17-year olds and would-be friends share emotionally-charged stories of their family life in the course of one summer night. Their often-absurd fights are mediated by the ironical appearance of a giant discarded teddy bear.

Born and raised in Piatra Neamț, a small town in the northeastern part of Romania, Răzvan Macovei moved to Bucharest when he was 15. He followed a bilingual program at “George Coșbuc” National College, and moved to London at 19 to study film at Queen Mary University of London. Now, he is in his third year of studies and is expected to graduate in June 2016. He has worked on various projects, including low budget films, commercials for Jaguar or Kent University, and high budget television programs.

His first short film, “Milk, No Sugar” (2014), was selected to compete in more than 13 international film festivals. His second short film, “ING”, has just been completed and is currently being submitted to festivals.

“The Night of the Bear” is Răzvan Macovei’s debut feature film. Currently, he is working on a feature film parody script that will raise awareness about some of the most pressing issues around the globe. He hopes to direct this script upon completion.

This year’s SEEFest, running between May 1 & 8, explores the theme of cinematic audacity by drawing attention to filmmakers whose works grapple with complex existential, ethical, and historical questions in innovative, and provocative ways.
