The latest film of one of Romania’s most prolific directors will have its UK premiere at our Romanian Cinematheque!
Dan Chişu’s intricate family drama ‘The Anniversary’ explores the dark sides of human character and features an impressive cast: the late Mircea Albulescu, Răzvan Vasilescu, Coca Bloos, Emilia Dobrin, Simona Bondoc, Emanuel Pârvu, Rodica Lazăr, Constantin Cojocaru and Lucian Ifrim.
The film presents the birthday party of Radu Maligan (Mircea Albulescu), a 94-year-old man who finds himself surrounded by his extended family and former co-workers for this supposedly happy reunion. Nevertheless, the evening will be troubled by secrets from the past. The film’s events unfold over a few hours and a multitude of characters explore how people of different ages can have different opinions about historical events and about the present-day Romania.
‘The Anniversary’ is Dan Chişu’s seventh feature in six years, which makes him the most prolific Romanian director of the last decade. The film was produced by Dakino Productions, and co-produced by 4 Proof Film and Watch Me Productions. After a world premiere in June 2017 at the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) and an international premiere at Warsaw, the film was released in Romanian cinemas in November 2017.
