Literature Night 2016 – Czech Republic

The Romanian Cultural Institute in Prague will be part of the 2016 edition of the Literature Night festival, held on May 11, 2016, starting at 6:00 p.m. The project is organized by the EUNIC Czech Republic cluster and the Czech Centre Network, in partnership with the European Commission Representation in Czech Republic.

This project is meant to contribute to the intercultural dialogue, offering a platform through which the European countries have the opportunity to present their contemporary literatures. Thus, public readings by some Czech famous actors will take place in various attractive places in Prague, but also in other cities like: Plzen, Kutna Hora, Liberec etc.

The Romanian program will consist of public readings of excerpts from the selection of essays The metaphysics of bicycle riders by Ciprian Vălcan and Dana Percec, translated into Czech by Hana Herrmannova and interpreted by the well-known Czech actor Miroslav Etzler. The selected excerpts will be read every 30 minutes, between 6:00 p.m and 11:00 p.m, at Economia, a beautiful editorial place found in the building of an old, refurbished factory (Pernerova 673/47, 186 00 Prague 8 - Karlin). Aditionally, the Romanian participation in the 2016 edition of the Literature Night festival in the Czech Republic will consist of a distinct literary event, the launch of the above-mentioned book, published by the "herrmann a synove" Publishing house with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic at the end of last year.

This year, on May 11, in the same interval, 6:00 p.m and 11:00 p.m., the organizers of the major annual literary events in Plzen - Literature Night and Meeting Literature - have decided to combine the two manifestations, bringing their traditional partners in the spotlight. Therefore, various national literatures and cultures will be massively promoted in all of the 9 spaces where the events will take place. Each of the participant institutes will provide prizes, flyers, booklets and other presentation materials that will be offered to the public after contests or raffles, organized at regular intervals. The Romanian Cultural Institute in Prague will promote the album Mari români de pretutindeni/ Outstanding Romanians Far and Wide by Dan Mironescu and Emanuel Bădescu (Alexis Publishing house, 2015).

As a connected multidisciplinary event, organized by the "herrmann a synove" Publishing house on May 12, starting at 7:00 p.m, at Klubovna, Praha 6, Dejvice, there will also be a Romanian evening - one day after the Literature Night festival and on the occasion of the opening of the Svet knihy International Book Fair. Thus, the Romanian author and guest, Mr. Ciprian Vălcan, will give a lecture on his work "Bazele filozofice ale scrierii mele" / "The Philosophical Bases of My Writing", the novel  Amândoi / Both by Liviu Rebreanu, translated into Czech by Mr. Jiří Našinec, will be launched, there will be debates on the topic of Czech-Romanian relations and about the Czech communities in Banat, illustrated in literature. The Romanian evening will end with the projection of a film about the Southern Banat and with a folklore-inspired musical moment.
