The December concert of the Enescu Series, dedicated to the National Day of Romania, is a truly unique opportunity for our distinguished audience to listen to outstanding opera singers in the elegant concert hall at 1 Belgrave Square. In 2019, we are proud to present the recital of celebrated young soprano Ana Bacanu, accompanied by gifted pianist Gabriel Gîțan. Ana Bacanu is an alumna of the National Opera Studio, the leading opera training organisation in the United Kingdom, which has prepared today’s talent for tomorrow’s opera since 1978.

Soprano Ana Bacanu studied at the University of Music in Bucharest. Ana is a graduate of the National Opera Studio in London, where she was supported by The Carne Trust. Roles in performances at the NOS included Susanna Le nozze di Figaro, Rodelinda Regina de’ Longobardi, Adina L’elisir d’amore, Lucia Lucia di Lammermoor and Lucia Rape of Lucrezia. In 2014, she began to perform at the Comic Opera in Bucharest, where roles included Konstanze Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Mademoiselle Silberklang Der Schauspieldirektor, Papagena Die Zauberflote and Dochita in the operetta Crai Nou by Romanian composer Ciprian Porumbescu. Ana has performed extensively, including performances such as Mozart’s Requiem, Poulenc’s Gloria, Johannes’s Passion Bach and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. She has also taken part in numerous concerts at Peles Castle, Cantacuzino Castle, the Romanian Athenaeum Hall and the Romanian Radio Hall.
Gabriel Gîțan is currently studying at the National University of Music in Bucharest. He is a laureate of many national and international competitions in the field of solo interpretation, chamber music and accompaniment such as: Hungarian Music Festival, Bucharest (2018), “Dan Cumpătă” Competition, Bucharest (2016), “Ada Ulubeanu” Competition, Bucharest (2015), “Victor Giuleanu” Competition, Bucharest (2015), “Ville de Gagny” International Piano Competition, France (2013). Gabriel Gîțan has played in various concert halls such as the Romanian Atheneum, the Hungarian Cultural Institutes in Paris, London and Bucharest, the George Enescu Museum and the Suțu Palace in Bucharest.
