Ryna @ New Europe Film Festival in Edinburgh

Ryna Ryna Ryna

The Romanian Cultural Institute supports the screening of Ruxandra Zenide's film Ryna at the New Europe Film Festival in Edinburgh. The film is about strong family ties, about poverty, social suppression and the abuse of power by those who rule under the guise of a false freedom. Ryna shows the awakening of a young girl's soul and the pain that goes with it. Caught between traditional values and materialistic dreams, Ryna pays a heavy price in order to preserve her identity.

The film won prizes at festivals like the one in Bordeaux, Mannheim-Heidelberg and Cinéma Tout Ecran in Geneva.

A striking feature debut by Romanian helmer Ruxandra Zenide. She shows a steady hand directing a varied cast, which includes a stylish and mischievous boy-girl-woman and a kindly but senile grandfather. Original plotting and a moody atmosphere should help push the film beyond fest screenings to reach selected art house auds. Deborah Young, Variety 2005
