November 13 – December 16 | SELBY GALLERY, Sarasota, FL
Following its presentation in Sacramento, CA, Traces of Contemporary Romania will open on November 14 at the Selby Gallery, Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL. See details about the exhibition here.
On November 13th at 7 pm meet also three of the exhibiting artists; Gabriela Boiangiu, Emanuel Borcescu, and Delia Popa will participate in a panel discussion, which is free and open to the public.
For two years, between 1993 and 1995, Ann Albritton (Ringling College of Art and Design), taught modern and contemporary art history at the Grigorescu Academy of Art (now the National University of Fine Arts) in Bucharest, Romania. Visiting Bucharest again in 2006, Albritton suggested to two former students, Mirela Ivanciu and Carmen Iovitu, that they collaborate on an exhibition featuring young Romanian artists that would travel to France and the US. Elaine O'Brien, art historian at Sacramento State University and writer on global art history, had visited Romania in 1995, joined the other curators. The curatorial team: Dr. Ann Albritton, Ringling College of Art and Design, Dr. Elaine O'Brien, Sacramento State University, Mirela Ivanciu, and Carmen Iovitu, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest, have all contributed to the development of this exhibition.
The exhibition has been supported in part by the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, the Tourist Development Tax through the Board of County Commissioners, the Tourist Development Council and the Sarasota County Arts Council.
Exhibition catalogue available.
