Romanian participation at the Jerusalem International Solo Dance Festival

The first edition of the Jerusalem International Solo Dance Festival will take place between September 6-8, 2022, at Hansen House. With the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, two solo dance shows will represent Romania in the international program of the festival:

“Femina”, choreography: Daniel Alexandru Dragomir – performed by Andreea Vălean; 06.09.2022, starting at 19:30, tickets –https://jisdf.co.il/program-6-9/?lang=en

The solo “Femina” is a part of the long length piece entitled “Nihil Sine Deo” – a work that is a physical representation of the process resulting from the actions of searching, understanding, and recognizing The Absolute. We define The Absolute as a superior entity, as the element that cannot be content at an exterior level. This element cannot be described in material terms, since it is associated with an intangible being and can only be described through feelings and emotions. The establishment of the relationship between the creator and his creation has led humanity to develop a permanent relationship with The Divine – something that is made possible both by accepting Divinity and by denying it. The actions of searching, understanding, and recognizing the superior entity are a continuous process characterized by fluctuations, and they lead to exhaustion. This moment in time is the only point where we can recognize The Absolute and acknowledge the Divinity we believe in. This stage of exhaustion is represented by the abandonment of conscious activity and by breaking away from fixations regarding the answers we intend to find at the end of the search processes. It is a moment of honesty where we can identify that elusive element that is emotionally definable on an individual level.

"Scraps of Sky", choreography: Andreea Vălean - performed by Andreea Vălean; 07.09.2022, starting at 19:30, tickets –https://jisdf.co.il/program-7-9/?lang=en

The solo follows the course of a female body that faces its limits and its importance, which gradually loses itself, and which tries to rebuild itself. The character at the center of this piece is activated and transformed by the processes that take place inside of her. The changes experienced are so strong, so radical, they transform her to such an extent that she can no longer be recognized by herself, can no longer be identified. The piece presents us with a sincere, unadulterated, or masked body. At the beginning of the journey, it is pure, spotless, and light, like a white sheet of paper, only to be then marked with a tumult of feelings and emotions that take it over. Thus, the body loses its essence, breaks down within its own being and is doomed to be rooted in ugliness, pettiness, and helplessness.

Andreea Vălean is a graduate of the Capsali High School of Choreography (Bucharest). Graduated the Bachelor and Master program of Choreography Art at Caragiale National University of Theater and Cinematography (Bucharest). Andreea has performed on a regular basis as first soloist at the Children’s Comic Opera, and for the last five years is a member of Bucharest's National Opera House, dancing in the company’s classical and neoclassical ballets. She is also a member of the Contemporary Creative Dreamers Dance Company. As a choreographer, she created multiple short pieces and has presented pieces at international dance festivals including the Florence Dance Festival (2021 and 2022). In May 2022, she created the long-length piece entitled “Nexus”, which won the Best Performance Award for the Master Program.

Daniel Alexandru Dragomir is a choreographer, a dancer and a teacher. He serves as the manager of the Contemporary Creative Dreamers dance Company. In addition to national and international touring, the CCD organization develops various projects in the choreographic arts area, runs productions, develops educational platforms, and trains beginners and professional dancers.

For the first time: a unique international contemporary dance festival in Jerusalem, hosting solo works by choreographers from Israel and from around the world. An exceptional event held by Angela Dance Co. Jerusalem, presenting individual works in direct contact with the audience. Under open skies in the mythical Hansen House compound, the festival holds three days of events and offers a quality art experience in a special Jerusalem late-summer atmosphere. Center stage will showcase an international variety of solo dance works with a singular personal statement, which corresponds with social, environmental, political and cultural issues, and in the same movement touches the sole soul by its spirit – to the abstract. Alongside the main events performed at the Hansen House, the festival offers master classes, discussion events and panels open to the general public and the professional community. JIFDS holds a residency program for Jerusalem artists and international guests, who are invited to a creation process of an original solo that will have its world premiere at the festival. The artists will work in the ancient spaces of the historic Lepers’ House – The Hansen House – and will create a contemporary dance, responding to the environment and place.
