Nicolae Titulescu: Between diplomatic excellence and the dangers of internal politics

ICR London is organizing on December 16, 2022 a lecture with the theme ,,Nicolae Titulescu: Between diplomatic excellence and the dangers of internal politics ". This event is part of ICR London's strategy to promote the role played by Romania on the international political scene. The speaker at this event is the journalist and historian George Damian.

During his career, Nicolae Titulescu fostered himself an impeccable public image, absolutely necessary for the extremely ambitious foreign policy objectives he pursued at European level. This image from the mass media of his time has been perpetuated in history treatises and became common place of the Romanian historical discourse. Based on the memoirs of contemporaries and archival documents, the balance exercise practiced by Nicolae Titulescu between diplomacy and the obstacles raised by Romanian internal politics will be presented, as well as the way he defined Romania's interests in European politics. Not least the lucidity he showed in the last years of his life, taken almost to clairvoyance, on the threshold of the disaster for Romania and Europe at the eve of confrontation of totalitarian regimes.
Titulescu was Romania's ambassador to Great Britain between December 1921 and August 1936, and Romanian Foreign Minister from November 1927 to November 1928 and from October 1932 to August 1936.
The English writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, who knew him personally, described Titulescu as "tall and mandarin-like, but with splendid histrionic gestures, and obviously a comic genius of the first order".

George Damian is a journalist and historian, currently a scientific researcher of the European Center for Studies in Ethnic Issues of the Romanian Academy. In 2014, his doctoral thesis at the University of Bucharest bore the title "The influence of the economic factor on Romania's foreign policy in the years before Second World War". He worked for the Deutsche Welle Rario, as well as for a number of publications, including Magazin Istoric and ZIUA, coordinating the Republic of Moldova edition of Adevărul from Bucharest. In his publishing activity, he addressed topics related to the history of Romanian diplomacy.
