Celebrating the Francophonie and the Centennial of Modern Romania, 2 - 15 March, 2018, in Holon, Jerusalem and Jaffa

The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, together with the Embassy of Romania to the State of Israel, invite you to celebrate the Francophonie Day, while commemorating the Centennial of Modern Romania. Between 2 - 15 March 2018, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, in collaboration with cultural institutes and francophone embassies accredited to Israel, will organize a series of cultural events celebrating the Francophonie Day.

The program will include two main events:

March 9, 2018: the Francophonie Fair at the Jewish-Arab Theater in Jaffa, between 12.00-14.00 hours
The  event will include stalls with information materials of cultural, tourist and historical interest, belonging to the 13 participating countries (Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, France, Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Bulgaria, Vietnam, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Cyprus, Romania, Greece), as well as  a buffet with traditional food products. The Romanian stand is organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Romania to the State of Israel. Groove Ambassadors, an Israeli music group, will perform at the fair, from 12.00 hours, on the esplanade of the Jaffa theater (10 Mifratz Shlomo Street, Old Town of Jaffa, phone no: 03 518 5563).

March 2 - 15, 2018: Film Festival dedicated to Francophonie  Day at the Holon and Jerusalem Cinematheques
Romania will be present in the program of the festival with a silent movie – Ecaterina Teodoroiu (1931, directed by Ion Niculescu–Brună), one of the historical landmarks of Romanian cinema, made available by courtesy of the Romanian National Film Center. The screenings will be accompanied by live music, composed by Dan Dediu, one of the most prestigious Romanian composers, and interpreted by Diana Moș (violin) and Adriana Maier (piano).

The Romanian movie will be presented to public on March 14, at 18.30 hours, at the Jerusalem Cinematheque (tickets: *9377), and on March 15, at 19.00 hours, at the Holon Cinematheque (tickets: *9377 or online at www.cinemaholon.org.il).

Ecaterina Teodoroiu (The heroine from Jiu), directed by Ion Niculescu-Brună, premiered on January 8, 1931, at the Bucharest movie theater "Femina", in a "gala screening", in the presence of the entire royal family, of government members, of the diplomatic corps and of high-ranking state officials. The movie highlights the character of Ecaterina Teodoroiu, a scout member who left home looking for her brother on the battlefield and who, upon finding out about his death, decides to take his place in combat. After having fought bravely, she falls in battle and her last words are "Keep going, fellow soldiers. Let’s fight for our country and our king!” The role of Ecaterina Teodoroiu is played by Felicia Frunză and the cast also includes protagonists of the real-life events presented in the movie (the mother of Ecaterina Teodoroiu in the movie is played by the real mother of Ecaterina Teodoroiu, Pompilian - the police commissioner is interpreted by the real life policeman). The movie also includes footage, showing Her Majesty Queen Mary of Romania visiting the hospital where Ecaterina Teodoroiu was being cared for. (Călin Căliman, History of Romanian film)

The movie highlights the personality of Ecaterina Teodoroiu, portrayed as a symbol of the fight for the unification of Modern Romania and of the sacrifice of Romanian army during the World War I.

During the Film Festival dedicated to the Francophonie Day, the public will have the opportunity to watch films from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Ivory Coast. All the movies in the Festival will be screened with Hebrew subtitles.

In addition to the main events of Francophonie Day, the French Institute in Tel Aviv will host, on March 5, 2018, at 19.30 hours, a conference by journalist Gaby Levin about the influence of French-speaking artists in the Israeli culture. The Tel Aviv University will organize, on March 13, 2018, at 14.00 hours, the colloquium "Le discours électoral en Afrique de l’Ouest francophone".
