Quod erat demonstrandum - Synopsis: Sorin, a gifted mathematician, doesn’t like to obey rules. His academic career has been thwarted because he refused to become a member of the Communist Party. While his research, which deals with pure mathematics, is apolitical, he is persecuted by the regime from the day that he sends an academic article for publication in the US. His friend Elena, who wishes to join her husband, an academic who left Romania and never returned, likewise suffers persecution by the regime. Alecu, the Securitate investigator in charge of their files, is also frustrated because he doesn’t get a promotion.
Andrei Gruzsniczki offers a stylized black-and-white drama that takes us back to Romania of the 1980s and provides a glimpse at the persecution academics experienced during the communist era. Awarded a Special Jury Prize at the most recent Rome Film Festival, Quod erat demonstrandum reflects the tradition of Romanian film of the past decade, particularly in the manner in which it deals with communist Romania on the eve of revolution.
