The Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) and ICR Beijing - Romanian Cultural Center supported Ana Cătălina Gubandru's artistic residency from July 24 to August 7, 2024, in Topu Town, located in the Yangtze Delta, near the metropolis of Shanghai.
During the two-week period, the artist developed an innovative project focused on the relationship between the human body and water. The aim of this project was to analyze and illustrate human interaction with water at both the molecular and symbolic levels, integrating experimental artistic elements with scientific ones. The artist works with various concepts and media, using the body, sound, text, interviews, photography, film, drawing, painting, installations, objects, participatory art, space, etc., in her experimental art.
Ana Cătălina Gubandru, an independent choreographer and dancer, graduated from the Ballet High School and the Choreography Department of UNATC – Bucharest. She has presented her creations at dance festivals and platforms in Romania, France (Uzes Danse, Dansem, Mouvements sur la Ville 2, 104 Paris, Mains d’Oeuvre), Germany (Tanz im August), Austria, Greece, Portugal, and the Czech Republic. Her works include: LAMUR (the most beautiful I can) – 2010, Trust in me ou les mots et les mots – 2010, I don’t know, I’ve never been here before – 2009, My performance – 2008. Between 2006-2009, she taught contemporary dance courses for amateurs at the National Dance Center Bucharest.
This initiative is part of ICR Beijing - Romanian Cultural Center’s efforts to promote education and cultural exchange, building bridges of dialogue between Romanian and Chinese artists.
