Today, 9th of July, 2009, a ten days long celebration of cinematography begins in Jerusalem. Beyond its contribution to Israeli film, the Jerusalem International Film Festival remains one of the few platforms that present the world's finest contemporary cinematic trends to its local audiences.
The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv is therefore happy to invite you to see the Romanian film The Happiest Girl in the World, only recently released but having already won awards at international festivals in Berlin and Sofia, as well as having been presented at Cannes.
Alongside the many young and surprising filmmakers who have appeared on the Romanian cinema scene in the last years, Radu Jude in his debut offers further evidence that the Romanian New Wave is a project with a real future. His short, The Television with a Hat (screened at last year's JFF), won the largest number of international awards for a Romanian short film ever. Like his peers - Cristian Mungiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, or Cristi Puiu, whose films are already familiar to the Israeli public - Jude turns to the small, simple stories of life and presents them in a way that only the cinema can, with deep psychological insight and meaning.
Synopsis: Eighteen-year-old Delia, from a poor family in a small Romanian town, wins an expensive car in a competition sponsored by a soft drink company. She and her parents travel to Bucharest to shoot a TV commercial featuring her in the new car. During the filming, an argument ensues between the girl and her parents as to the ownership of the prize. Delia wants to hold on to the car, while her parents want to sell it for a profit. What was to be the happiest event in her short life quickly turns into an emotional drama the likes of which she's never experienced.

דליה, בחורה בת 18, בת למשפחה קשת יום מעיירה קטנה ברומניה, זכתה ברכב יוקרתי לאחר ששלחה שלוש תוויות של בקבוקי מיץ. יחד עם הוריה היא נוסעת לבוקרשט שם היא צריכה לצלם סרטון פרסומת אשר יוכיח כי התחרות אכן אותנטית והחברה המפרסמת עמדה בהתחייבותה. בזמן הצילומים מתגלעים בינה ובין הוריה חילוקי דעות בנוגע לבעלות על הזכייה. חילוקי הדעות גולשים במהרה לוויכוחים רעשניים. דליה, הרוצה להחזיק ברכב, מתנגדת להוריה הרוצים לקצור את הרווחים הכספיים אחרי מכירת המכונית. מה שנראה כאירוע השמח ביותר בחייה הקצרים, הופך במהרה לדילמה ולדרמה האמוציונאלית ביותר שחוותה אי פעם.
לצד במאים צעירים ומפתיעים שהפציעו בשמי הקולנוע הרומני בשנים האחרונות, סרט הביכורים של ראדו ג'ודה מוכיח פעם נוספת כי "הגל הרומני החדש" הוא פרויקט אמיתי ובעל עתיד. אנו מכירים אותו מסרטו הקצר 'הטלוויזיה עם הכובע' שזכה במספר הפרסים הבינ"ל הרב ביותר לסרט רומני קצר, סרט שהוצג בפסטיבל ירושלים דאשתקד (בתוכנית "קולנוע רומני: הדור הבא"). בדומה לעמיתיו מהדור הזה - כריסטיאן מונג'יו, קורנליו פורומבויו או כריסטי פויו שסרטיהם מוכרים זה מכבר לקהל הישראלי - ז'ודה פונה לסיפורים הקטנים והפשוטים של החיים ומציג אותם באופן שרק הקולנוע יודע לספרם; עם תובנות ומשמעויות פסיכולוגיות עמוקות.
