Alina Șerban is an art historian, curator and
editor. Her researches address the post-war Eastern European art and
architecture from a transnational and transdisciplinary perspective. In
2013, she founded the independent publishing programme P+4 Publications in Bucharest, dedicated to Romanian contemporary art and architecture where she edited among others the artists’ publication: Ion Grigorescu. Bucharest; Dan Perjovschi. The Book of Notebooks; Matei Bejenaru. PRUT (2018).
In 2009 Șerban curated the Romanian Pavilion, the 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, The Seductiveness of the Interval (artists
Ștefan Constantinescu, Andreea Faciu, Ciprian Mureșan), itinerated in
2010 at the Renaissance Society, at the University of Chicago, Chicago,
US.
Șerban curated a series of exhibitions that introspects the complex
interrelations between art, architecture, collective memory and the
dynamic of the public space in Romania during 1960s–1970s and after
1990s: The Factory of Facts and Other (Unspoken) Stories at Salonul de proiecte Bucharest and DOMINO art space, Paintbrush Factory, Cluj (2016); Vision of a Nation, Fotogalleriet Oslo (2015); Enchanting Views: Romanian Black Sea Tourism Planning and Architecture of the 1960s and 1970s, Sala Dalles, Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest, (2014); and Series. Multiples. Realisms, Uqbar Project Space, Berlin (2014).
Since 2008, starting with the exhibitions curated at the Galerie im Taxispalais Innsbruck, Ana Lupaș and Geta Brătescu,
she began focusing on retrospective exhibitions dedicated to remarkable
personalities of Romanian Neo-avant-garde art and to themes relevant
for the history of art during 1970s and 1980s, such as Sigma: Cartographies of Learning 1969–1983 (2015) or 24 Arguments. Early Encounters in Romanian Neo-avant-garde 1969–1971,the National Museum of Art of Romania (2019–2020).
Starting 2017, she co-directs The Institute of the Present with
Ștefania Ferchedău, a research and an artist resource platform in the
field of visual and performing culture. Centered on artists and their
personal accounts, time-specific encounters and means of
(self-)archiving, the Institute looks at various practices and
situations from the recent past until today from a transnational and
transcultural perspective.
