Motke will display his exhibition "Time Fragments", in which the white is dominant, in the Romanian Cultural Institute beginning 27.4
"Such renewal rises from the depth of my outset experiences and soul, which have been covered by a long time layer of gray dust", says the Holocaust survivor artist and recipient of the Ish-Shalom Award for life achievement. "My ancient soul's visions were brought out to the bright light and were shaped into texture in white".
The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv displays this month a unique exhibition – "Time Fragments" – homage to the multi-discipline artist Motke Blum. This exhibition is a circle closure for the 85-years-old artist, and it depicts the constant and continuous dialogue between the fragments of his life, while constantly renewing it.
Motke Blum was born in a small village in Romania in 1925. When the Germans entered Romania, he was taken to forced labor, where he used to paint on walls. His outstanding skills were a source of salvation not only for his tormented soul, and more than once his art saved his life. After escaping from forced labor in 1944, he boarded an immigrants' ship on his way to Israel.
All through his fruitful years of creation, Motke held over 50 one-man-shows commissioned from him in Israel and abroad. In 1958 he decided to set his roots and establish his studio in Jerusalem, which has always been the inspiration for his spiritually wrapped creations.
In 1964 he went on an exhibition tour to Europe, and was internationally acknowledged for his powerful and courageous work. In 2005 Motke received the Ish-Shalom Award for life achievement.
Time Fragments
The exhibition "Time Fragments" deals with the dynamics between the renewal of the artist and the origins of his art: The small, remote village experiences which Motke experienced as a child, together with Jewish life texture in the big city. His images as if walk out of the small town's oldest stories, all wrapped in white; Motke's paintings also express his attempts to purify his experiences as a human being in the 20th century using the purifying cleansing white.
Motke explains: "To give the white colors perspective the internal reserves must emerge from their anonymity. The white has a royal simplicity and is the absolute color of nature-the fusion of all colors through the prism. In order to provide the white mass and texture I must search within myself constant renewal, which will brighten the white colour and give it light. Such renewal rises from the depth of my outset experiences and soul, which have been covered by a long time layer of gray dust.
My ancient sights of the soul were brought out to the shining light and were shaped into the white texture, muted hues in pencil, which give the white airiness and structure."
Motke graduated "Bezalel" Art Academy with honors, his versatile work are displayed among the most important art collections in Israel and abroad. Motke continues to create in Khutzot Hayotzer Artists Colony in Jerusalem, constantly renewing himself and his work through color, shape and texture, in the classic and modern media including hi-tech.
