London has just discovered Romanian dance and is coming back for more. After successful performances on two of the most prestigious scenes - The Illusionists by Madalina Dan at Southbank Centre and Lulu's Room by Mihaela Dancs at Sioban Davies Studios -, Madalina Dan returns before the enthusiastic yet demanding British public with her most recent performance: Don't Worry, I Was Just Bluffing. Produced by Bucharest-based National Centre of Dance, Gabriela Tudor Foundation and The Dance Theatre Workshop, the show will be hosted by Chisenhale Dance Space, the hot spot of "new dance" in London.
Madalina's trademark quirkiness, depth and dynamism caught the eye of Gillie Kleiman while performing at the Southbank Centre and she wanted her back for a triple bill that will also feature New Music (France) and Live Art (Ireland) and, as one critic has proclaimed, will "balance between arts, madness and revolution".
For more than 25 years, Chisenhale Dance Space has been a centre for research and development in movement arts and independent dance and it is considered to be the only place in London that purposefully tries to move across disciplines.
Madalina Dan is the rising star of Romanian dance, equally praised for her dancing skills and her choreographic flair. In 2008 she was awarded the "danceWEB Scholarship-Vienna" for contemporary dance. Here are some of her rich body of work: Splitting / Dedublarea, presented at Springdance Festival and Tanzquartier Vienna in 2009; The Illusionists / Iluzionistele, show produced by the National Center of Dance Bucharest; Beginning, Middle, End in collaboration with Andrea Bozic (Croatia / Netherlands) and Michael Pinchbeck (UK), a show that premiered at Springdance Festival Utrecht in 2009.
