"January 24, 1859 was the first important victory of the Romanian Nation. The election of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, as a ruler of both Wallachia and Moldova, irreversibly started the reunification process of modern Romania. Several years before, the Unification problem was becoming a central issue, meantime being debated internationally. Through the 1856 Paris Treaty, the Principalities emerged from the exclusive protection of one power. However, the collective guarantee offered by the main Powers did not determine the total solution of their problem, in the sense wanted by the Romanians. The Paris Convention in 1858 was a compromise, a surprising document. It was offering the premises for an increased modernization process, completing the one in the previous period, but it was also slowing the renewal process through inadequate election regulations. Most of all, it was not accomplishing the main goal of the Romanian people, deciding the constitution of the national state through the unification of the two Principalities. On this point, the Romanians faced the big Powers with their decision, over-passing the obstacle of gathering the Elective Assembly, on the ground of some restrictive regulations."
