The Establishment of the “Jean Abou Rached” Scholarship for Studying the Romanian Language

The Honorary Consulate of Romania in Tripoli – Lebanon, in collaboration with the Romanian Embassy in Beirut and the Romanian Cultural Institute, established the “Jean Abou Rached” Scholarship for studying the Romanian language. This scholarship will be granted every year to a Lebanese student to take part in the Romanian language, culture, and civilization summer courses in Braşov, Romania, held by the Romanian Cultural Institute.

The program of Romanian language studies will take place between the 3rd and the 28th of July, 2012 and is organized in partnership with the Transylvania University of Braşov, “Casa Mureşenilor” Museum, and Reduta Cultural Center. The program will include 60 hours of Romanian language courses, creative workshops (dancing, journalism, gastronomy, and acting), culture and civilization courses with well-known Romanian public figures, along with movie projections and cultural documentation programs.

The scholarship granted by the Honorary Consulate of Romania in Tripoli holds the name of the Honorary Consul Dr. Jean Abou Rached and covers the entire cost of the courses, the accommodation, the meals, and all the activities included in the program, in addition to the medical insurance, the visa, the plane ticket, and the transportation fees.

This year, the scholarship will be granted to Ms. Cynthia Abou Jaoude, holder of a Master’s degree in Translation Studies. Ms. Abou Jaoude is an Arabic language teacher for foreigners at Saint Joseph University and works as a journalist, translator, and copywriter in Arabic, French, English, and Spanish. Ms. Abou Jaoude is currently attending the Romanian language courses organized, starting September 2011, by the Romanian Embassy to Lebanon and the Romanian Cultural Institute at the CLAC Cultural Center in Sin el Fil.

The initiative to establish this scholarship came upon the request of many Lebanese citizens who showed interest in studying in Romania, as well as the Romanian language courses students, the business community, and the members of mixed Romanian-Lebanese families.
The Romanian language is spoken by more than 30 million people and is the official language in Romania and the Republic of Moldova. It is also spoken by numerous Romanian communities in South-Eastern Europe and in the European Union.
