Sihăstria Putnei, Faces from Romanian monastic life

Photographer Dragoş Lumpan discovers an unexpected world where daily gestures are marked by symbolic value.
A photographer and theologian joins the monks of Sihăstria Putnei for the Easter fasting. He follows them with his camera to the places of prayer, work, and repast. Little by little they get accustomed to the presence of this camera which will document the tale of their daily life. They accept the secular intermediary of this medium, photography, without being disturbed in their intimate prayers.
Sihăstria Putnei is a Romanian Orthodox monastic retreat in Northern Bucovina, built during the reign of Stephen the Great and Holy (1457-1504); it is first mentioned in a document around the year 1466.

Dragoş Lumpan works as a freelance photographer. He is the main collaborator of the Romanian edition of National Geographic and the official photographer of the campaign dedicated to Sibiu 2007-European Capital of Culture.

The photo and multimedia exhibition, first arranged by Celia Ghyka in Luxembourg, is organized by the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, with financial support provided by the Cantemir Program of RCI.
