Shining through a Long Dark Night:

April 16-27 aprilie | Lincoln Center, Walter Reade Theater  Featuring newly restored classic films by Lucian Pintilie, Liviu Ciulei, Iulian Mihu, Dan Pita and Mircea Daneliuc, alongside recent works by Cristian Mungiu, Cristi Puiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, Radu Muntean, and Nae Caranfil the season at the Lincoln Center is the first historical overview of Romanian cinematography in America. The widespread attention and acclaim that Romanian movies have received in recent years persuaded Richard Pena, director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, to take advantage and initiate this season in a moment called by international media "a cinematographic Renaissance". Film directors and Romanian film critics will be present for the opening of the season and several special events will be organized by RCINY on this occasion.

"Over the past few years, current Romanian cinema has established an extraordinary reputation; its films continue to be awarded major festival prizes, and increasingly international audiences are discovering and supporting these powerful if often disturbing films. Yet this movement did not emerge from a vacuum; since the Sixties, there has been a continuous output of formally innovative and politically daring works, made under remarkably difficult conditions and often running afoul of government censorship. This trend reached its apogee in the 1970s, when a generation of provocative filmmakers-Dan Pita, Mircea Daneliuc, Alexandru Tatos, Mircea Veroiu, among others-formed a kind of "new wave" that challenged the film establishment. With Shining through a Long, Dark Night, several of the finest recent film have been brought together with key works of pre-1989 Romanian cinema-showing both the continuities and contrasts, as well as celebrating an extraordinarily lively-if frequently interrupted-cinematic tradition." - Richard Pena

The film season is coorganized by the Lincoln Center and the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, with financial and logistic support from several Romanian institutions: the National Center for Cinematography, the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Film Archive.
